Experience to Lead

For Mayor East Gwillimbury

Why I am Running for Mayor

In 2018, I wrote that there are usually two reasons people run for elected office: you have an axe to grind, or you believe in public service. Eight years later, I still believe that. And I still believe public service is one of the highest callings.

What’s changed is this: I’ve now had eight years to test that belief in council chambers, at kitchen tables, and in the conversations that don’t make the news but shape a community. I’ve worked to bring DUCA Credit Union to Mount Albert, championed rural broadband, served as Chair of Parks & Recreation through the construction of the Health and Active Living Plaza, and pushed hard on environmental policy and community development. I’ve learned what it looks like when government works well — and when it doesn’t.

East Gwillimbury is growing faster than almost any community in Canada. That growth brings real opportunity, and real risk. We now have a new Southlake Health acute care hospital coming to East Gwillimbury, something that would have seemed unimaginable not long ago. That is exactly the kind of generational investment that changes what a community can become. But it doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people show up, build relationships, and do the hard, unglamorous work of making the case.

That’s what I want to bring to the Mayor’s office, built around three priorities that I hear about at every door.

Community Safety.

Growth without safety isn’t progress. As our population expands, residents deserve to feel secure in their neighbourhoods, on their roads, and in our public spaces. I will work to ensure our emergency services keep pace with our growth, and that the planning decisions we make today don’t create the safety problems we’ll have to solve tomorrow.

Affordability.

East Gwillimbury must remain a place where people of all ages and incomes can afford to live, raise a family, and put down roots. That means responsible fiscal management at town hall, smart infrastructure investment, and advocating loudly at every level of government for the supports our residents need. It also means keeping a close eye on what growth costs the people already here.

Economic Development.

A thriving local economy is the foundation of everything else. I’ve spent over twenty years in the private sector, working my way up to Vice President in the insurance industry, and I’ve seen firsthand how business growth creates opportunity and resilience in a community. Attracting good employers, supporting local businesses, and leveraging major investments like the new Southlake hospital to build a broader economic ecosystem: that is the work I am ready to lead.

I am a sixth-generation East Gwillimbury resident. My family has been part of this land longer than the town has had its name. My parents, Murray and Ruby, raised me to understand that hard work and community service aren’t separate things; they’re the same thing. I’ve tried to live that out, from my years in the insurance industry to my work with the Alzheimer’s Society of York Region, where I served as Board Chair. I’ve seen what it means for a family to face a disease that takes everything slowly. And I’ve seen what a community can do when it decides to show up for its most vulnerable members.

I’m running for Mayor because I believe East Gwillimbury deserves leadership that is experienced, connected, and focused on what actually matters to residents. Not stunts. Not headlines. Real work, done with the people who call this place home.

My family chose East Gwillimbury. I choose it again every day. I hope you’ll give me the honour of serving as your next Mayor.
